Soccer: AS Roma appoint Rudi Garcia as new coach

Rome, June 12 - AS Roma announced Wednesday that
they have reached a deal to appoint Frenchman Rudi Garcia as
their new head coach.
The 49-year-old former midfielder will sign a two-year
Garcia, who has Spanish roots, had been in charge of Lille
since 2008 and led them to the French league-Cup double in 2011.
"We are very excited and confident that Rudi Garcia is the
right coach for AS Roma," said Chairman James Pallotta, a part
of the Boston-based consortium that made Roma Serie A's first
foreign-controlled club in 2011.
"He is a proven winner with a great football mind who we
believe fits in perfectly with our vision for the future".
Garcia replaces Aurelio Andreazzoli, who was not retained
after Roma endured a disappointing Serie A campaign with a
talented young squad, finishing outside the European
qualification slots in sixth place.
Andreazzoli was promoted from assistant to head coach in
February when the club sacked Czech boss Zdenek Zeman.
"A new chapter opens today," Garcia said in New York after
meeting Pallotta and other club executives.
"I'm proud and honoured to come to Rome with the aim of
winning the title with this club".
Before taking over at Lille, Garcia coached at
Saint-Etienne, first as an assistant and then as head coach,
Dijon and Le Mans.
