Religion teacher shot dead by janitor had been threatened

Vittoria, June 17 - A teacher killed by the school
janitor had been threatened several times by the man before her
death, the woman's family revealed Monday.
Giovanna Nobile, who taught religion at the Francesco
Pappalardo school in the Sicilian town of Vittoria, was killed
Saturday by janitor Salvatore Lo Presti.
Nobile died from gunshots to the abdomen.
Before then, the janitor had threatened her and other
teachers because they had signed petitions to have him
transferred to another school, according to Nobile's family.
She, "along with other colleagues, had been made the
subject of delusional threats from Lo Presti," whom they all
feared, they said.
The family said the school authorities should have done
something about the janitor much earlier, to protect the safety
of staff and students.
A wave of often fatal violence against women in Italy has
been gaining more attention and forcing action from authorities.
Last week, the national government named Isabella Rauti, an
education professor and journalist, as Italy's policy adviser on
gender violence and femicide.
