Brindisi bomber sentenced to life in prison


Brindisi, June 18 - A man who confessed to the
May 19, 2012 bombing at a Brindisi school that killed a
16-year-old girl and injured nine others was found guilty and
sentenced to life in prison, a court in the city said.
Giovanni Vantaggiato was found responsible for the bombing
that killed Melissa Bassi at the trade institute named after the
assassinated wife of anti-Mafia magistrate Giovanni Falcone.
Anti-mafia investigators were involved in the case due to
fears it might have involved domestic terrorism or organised
Vantiaggiato, a 69-year-old businessman, has given no
plausible motive for his actions and insisted that he acted
The bombing at the school came close to the 20th
anniversary of a mafia bombing that killed Falcone and his wife
near Palermo.
Shortly after the school bombing, Vantiaggiato led
investigators to three other bombs with remote triggers that he
had hidden off a country road outside the city of Lecce.
