Retailers demand sweeping reform to cut taxes

Rome, June 19 - A comprehensive reform to lower
taxes is necessary to aid businesses and boost employment as
Italy is suffering its longest recession in over 20 years, the
president of Italian retailers' association Confesercenti Marco
Venturi said on Wednesday.
''We cannot accept a measure which lowers (regional tax)
Irpef and raises VAT, scraps (real estate property tax) IMU and
increases (municipal tax) Tares'', said Venturi, whose
association represents small and medium-sized businesses in the
retail and tourism sectors.
''We need a real reform to reduce fiscal pressure and aid
companies and employment rather than annuities and estates''.
