Moscow, June 26 - A wide range of masterpieces by
Italian master Titian, never before brought together for Russian
audiences, has opened at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
Eleven masterpieces from several museums in eight Italian
cities, including two large altarpieces, were gathered for the
exhibition organized by Italian curators and the director of the
Pushkin, Irina Antonova.
Artistic ties between Russia and Italy are becoming
increasingly important, Italian Ambassador Antonio Zanardi Landi
said at the show's opening in Moscow.
"Titian is the first truly European painter, a modern
artist who changed the course of painting, influencing great
artists of the 17th century including Velazquez, Rubens, Poussin
and even Rembrandt," he said.
The exhibition, which continues until September 29,
reconstructs the entire artistic career of the Venetian painter,
focusing on three areas: sacred art, allegorical works and
portraiture.
