Soccer: Tevez ready to take Del Piero's No. 10 shirt

(By Paul Virgo)
Rome, June 27 - Carlos Tevez said Thursday he was
honoured to take the Juventus number 10 shirt that was, until
recently, worn by Alessandro Del Piero, but he stressed that he
was not overawed by the responsibility.
"The responsibility is something I already experienced at
(former club) Boca Juniors when they gave me (Diego) Maradona's
number 10," the prolific Argentine striker told a press
conference after signing a three-year contract with the
Turin-based Serie A champions.
"Juve's number 10 has been worn by great champions in the
past, such as Del Piero, who was the captain and symbol of this
"It will be an honour for me to continue this tradition,"
added the 29-year-old, who has been given a warm reception since
arriving in Turin on Wednesday to complete his move from
Manchester City.
In addition to Del Piero, who left Juve after 19 seasons
last year and joined Sydney FC, the number 10 shirt has also
been worn at Juventus by past greats such as Omar Sivori, Michel
Platini and Roberto Baggio.
Tevez, whose honours include the Champions League crown he
won with Manchester United in 2008, said he is confident he can
help Juve win a third consecutive Serie A title and strengthen
their bid to be contenders in Europe's premier club competition.
"Four years ago, I chose to move to Manchester City because
of the targets they were aiming for," he said.
"I wanted to play in the Champions League and help the team
win a league title after a long absence.
"I've noted the same ambitions at Juventus. They want to
keep finishing first in Italy, as they've done over the past two
years, and aspire to win the Champions League.
"This made my decision easier. During the last two years,
Juventus have shown themselves to be a great team.
"As far as I'm concerned, I'll try and bring my experience
and quality.
"The side features great champions such as (Italy
goalkeeper Gianluigi) Buffon and (playmaker Andrea) Pirlo, with
whom I'm sure it will be very easy to play alongside".
Juve will reportedly pay City nine million euros for the
player, plus performance-related bonuses that are likely to take
the overall transfer fee up to 12 million and could lift it as
high as 15 million.
The Turin giants have acquired a fine striker, who,
however, is also a controversial character.
He spent a part of his stint at City, whom he joined from
local rivals Manchester United, on the sidelines after irking
former coach Roberto Mancini by refusing to warm up during a
Champions League match at Bayern Munich in 2011.
He netted 34 goals in two seasons at Manchester United and
73 in four seasons at City.
His move from Brazilian side Corinthians to London club
West Ham United in 2006 broke English Premier League rules on
signing players whose rights were owned by non-club third
His goals helped keep West Ham in the Premier League and
the London club subsequently were fined 5.5 million pounds and
forced to pay relegated Sheffield United 18 million.
After playing in the Argentine, Brazilian and English top
flights, Tevez said he is relishing the chance to play in Serie
"I've always wanted to play here," he said.
"It's one of the toughest leagues and I'm motivated by the
challenge. I'll need to get used to the pace of the game over
here and pre-season will be the ideal period in which to
Tevez has scored 13 goals in 62 appearances for Argentina,
although he has not played for his nation since 2011.
