Italian president demands response to US spy reports

Zagreb, July 1 - Italian President Giorgio
Napolitano on Monday demaned the United States provide
"satisfactory responses" to media reports that it spied on the
diplomatic offices of the European Union and several countries,
including Italy.
"It's a thorny issue that needs to be met by satisfactory
responses," Napolitano told reporters during a visit to Zagreb.
The head of state added that he did not know if reports
Italy's diplomatic offices in Washington and New York had been
spied upon were true.
"I don't have news of this type," Napolitano said. "You can
ask the foreign minister (Emma Bonino) if she has information".
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton
said on Sunday that U.S. authorities were immediately contacted
about the alleged surveillance activities after reports in
German magazine Der Spiegel and British daily The Guardian.
