Vatican City, July 1 - Francis's first trip as
pope, to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, sends a
signal of his commitment to helping the poor and oppressed, the
editor of the official Vatican newspaper wrote Monday.
In an article in Osservatore Romano, Gian Maria Vian said
the pope's trip to Lampedusa on July 8 to celebrate mass with
migrants demonstrates his priorities.
It also shows how Francis' style differs from his
predecessors.
Lampedusa, which is between Sicily and North Africa, is a
main stop-off point for boats carrying migrants trying to enter
Italy.
The number of migrants increases annually in the summer
months as sea conditions improve.
Lampedusa's migrant reception centre has been packed well
beyond its capacity in recent weeks.
Many people, usually packed inside unsafe boats, die each
year trying to make the trip from North Africa to Italy.
