F1: Alonso confident of safe German GP after tyre explosions

Rome, July 3 - Ferrari's Fernando Alonso said he
was confident Sunday's German Grand Prix will be safe after a
series of tyre explosions at last weekend's race at Silverstone
in Britain raised alarm that Formula One drivers' lives could be
on the line.
Tyre supplier Pirelli said on Tuesday that an investigation
had showed the blowouts were caused by a series of factors,
including teams putting tyres intended for the right rear on the
left side of their cars and inflating them to lower pressures
than recommended.
The Italian company said that its tyres were safe if used
correctly, but had nevertheless decided to take stronger rear
tyres to this weekend's German Grand Prix and introduce a new
range by the time of the Hungarian Grand Prix later this month.
"After what we saw in Silverstone, we now go to the
Nurburgring, confident we can see an improvement," said Spain's
Alonso, a two-time world champion.
"I know that various modifications have been applied and
let's hope that means all of us drivers can race in safe
"At the moment, we can't make any predictions, because no
one has tried them and we don't know what and how many benefits
they can bring, apart from trusting in the fact that it won't be
dangerous to race".
