Letta defends top cop's appointment to Finmeccanica post

Rome, July 10 - Premier Enrico Letta defended the
appointment of a former police chief to run Finmeccanica during
questioning Wednesday by the 5-Star Movement (M5S).
Gianni De Gennaro's appointment to the state-controlled
Italian defence and aerospace contractor was "based on the
principles of transparency," Letta said.
But the anti-etablishment M5S was not satisfied with the
response, pointing out De Gennaro's record as chief of police
during a controversial and violent Group of Eight leaders summit
in Genoa in 2001.
"In any democratic country, De Gennaro would have been
retired," said Massimo Artini, an M5S MP.
