Rome, July 12 - The following is a city-by-city
guide to some of Italy's art exhibitions:
FLORENCE - Palazzo Vecchio, Forte Belvedere: monumental
sculptures by Zhang Huan; until October 13.
- Uffizi: The Great Prince, 1663-1713 - Collector
and Patron: show marking 300th anniversary of death of
Ferdinando de' Medici, including works by Andrea del Sarto,
Carracci, Parmigianino; until November 3.
- Palazzo Strozzi: An Idea of Beauty, including
Vanessa Beecroft, Chiara Camoni, Andreas Gefeller, Alicja Kwade,
Jean-Luc Mylayne, Isabel Rocamora, Anri Sala and Wilhelm Sasnal;
until July 28.
- Piazza Strozzi, The Springtime of the Renaissance,
Sculpture and the Arts in Florence 1400-60; until August 18.
MANTUA - Palazzo Te: video-artist Fabrizio Plessi
'interacts' with Giulio Romano frescoes; until September 15,
first of cycle including Bill Viola, Candida Hofer, Giuseppe
Penoen, Ai We Wei.
MILAN - Palazzo Reale: Gianni Berengo Gardin, History of a
Photographer, 180 black-and-white photos; until September 8.
- Piazza della Scala: The World of Leonardo, until
July 31.
MONTEPULCIANO - Fortezza: Giorgio de Chirico, Portraits,
Figure and Form, 68 works until September 30.
PIEVE DI CADORE - Palazzo Cosmo: shown for first time in
Titian's birthplace, his masterpiece Pope Alexander VI
Presenting Jacopo Pesaro to Saint Peter (1502-1512), loaned from
Antwerp's Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten; until October
6.
RAVELLO - Villa Rufolo and square outside Oscar Niemeyer
Auditorium: Mimmo Paladino, 50 sculptures; until October 31.
ROME - Capitoline Museums: Archimedes: Art and the
Invention of Science, until January 12.
- same venue: The Age of Equilibrium; an array of
ancient Roman statuary and decor highlighting the balance
achieved between Rome and its provinces between the reigns of
Trajan and Marcus Aurelius; third installment of the five-year
'Giorni di Roma' cycle ranging from the Republican Era to Late
Antiquity.
- Roman Forum: The Revival of Antiquity in Contemporary
Art, until September 29.
- Ara Pacis: Genesis: Photographs by Sebastiano Salgado;
until September 15.
- Jewish Museum, Survivor: Primo Levi in the portraits of
Larry Rivers; until October 15.
- Palazzo Braschi: English landscape artists in Rome
between the 18th and 19th centuries; until September 15.
- Fondazione Roma Museo, Palazzo Sciarra: Louise Nevelson,
through July 21.
- Colosseum: Constantine 313 AD: 200 works commemorating
proclamation of religious freedom in Roman Empire; until
September 5.
- MAXXI: The Sea Is My Land; 140 Mediterranean photos by 22
emerging artists; until September 29.
- same venue: Francesco Vezzoli, until November 24.
- Palazzo delle Esposizioni: Helmut Newton, White Women/
Sleepless Nights/Big Nudes; until July 21.
- same venue: Empire State, Art in New York Today; until
July 21.
TURIN - Palazzo Madama: The Collector of Wonders, the
Basilewsky Hermitage; marking the 150th anniversary of Turin's
Civic Museums, a tribute to the art of collecting dedicated to
Alexander Basilewsky, one of the most renowned collectors of the
eighteenth century in Europe; 60 works from the Middle Ages to
the Renaissance, many not displayed in the West since they left
France in 1885; until October 13.
VENICE - various sites: 55th Art Biennial, 88 countries
including for first time Vatican; until November 24.
- Punto della Dogana, Francois Pinault Foundation:
'Praise of Doubt', 60 works by 20 contemporary giants including
Maurizio Cattelan, Jeff Koons, Jeff Bauman, Adel Abdessemed,
Marcel Broodthaers, Dan Flavin, Thomas Schutte and Charles Ray;
until December 31.
