8 copper-theft arrests near Bari

Bari, July 15 - Italian police on Monday arrested
eight people suspected of copper theft from power and phone
lines near the southern Italian city of Bari.
They are suspected of forming a criminal gang to traffic
copper stolen from power company Enel, telecoms group Telecom
Italia and other firms, police said.
Police cordoned off a 1,000-square-metre stockpile of copper
and other metals.
They said the alleged gang had trafficked some 2,000 tonnes
of copper.
Last Thursday almost 800 people across Italy were arrested
in connection with copper thefts from power and telephone cables
as well as cemeteries across Italy.
Copper thefts have risen in recession-hit Italy over the
last year.
