Brussels says it will consider new funding for Pompeii

Brussels, July 16 – New funding arrangements for
developments at the iconic Pompeii archaeological site could be
considered if Italy develops a new plan for its priorities, a
European official said Tuesday.
"We are ready to consider new funding to Pompeii within the
financial framework 2014-2020," Johannes Hahn, the EU
commissioner for regional policy, told ANSA.
Such assistance would be aimed at supporting Italian
cultural heritage and quality tourism, added Hahn.
One of the world's most significant architectural sites,
Pompeii has been faced with numerous challenges in recent years.
The Italian government is struggling to meet security
requirements to maintain Pompeii's designation on UNESCO's World
Heritage list.
Other plans for the revamping and preservation of the
ancient archaeological site are in the works, funded by an
injection of 105 million euros in restoration money.
A parallel project involving private investors and
businesses to develop areas surrounding the archeological site
is also planned.
