Padua, July 17 - A local councilor in Padua was
found guilty of instigation to commit racist sex crimes against
Italy's first black minister.
Dolores Valandro, formerly of the anti-immigrant Northern
League, was handed a suspended sentence of 13 months in prison
and was banned from public office for three years.
The case refers to Valandro calling for Integration
Minister Cecile Kyenge to be raped in a June 13 Facebook post.
"(Why) doesn't anyone ever rape her in order (for her) to
understand what the victim of this heinous crime feels like?"
wrote Valandro under a photo of Kyenge.
Valandro has since been expelled from the Northern League,
whose members have made repeated attacks on the Congolese-born
minister.
At a League rally over the weekend, Deputy Senate Speaker
Roberto Calderoli said she looked like an orangutan, prompting
calls for his resignation which he has shown no signs of
heeding, though he has apologized.
