Number of Italians turning to charity for food jumps 33%


Rome, July 17 - The dramatic rise in poverty in
Italy has driven a 33% jump in demand from charities
distributing meals and food to the poor, Italy's leading farm
group said Wednesday.
The economic crisis that is driving up unemployment and
pushing families into poverty has meant a 33% increase between
2010 and 2012 for charitable assistance, said the Italian
Confederation of Farmers (CIA).
It was reacting to a new report on poverty released by the
national statistics agency, showing that poverty levels are
climbing rapidly.
