Police find Verga manuscripts worth four million euros


Rome, July 19 - Police said Friday that they had
found and seized 36 manuscripts by Italian writer Giovanni Verga
in a special operation by a unit specialised in dealing with
illegal possession and trade of cultural treasures.
Hundreds of Verga's letters were also confiscated in Rome
and the northern city of Pavia, along with notes and drawings by
The material, which has an estimated value of four million
euros, has been taken to the University of Pavia's manuscript
research centre.
Verga (1840-1922) was an Italian realist writer.
He is famous for his portrayals of life in Sicily.
His most famous works are the short story Cavalleria
Rusticana, which was subsequently made into a play and an opera,
and the novel I Malavoglia (The House by the Medlar Tree).
