Fight against extreme poverty 'major priority' says Letta

Rome, July 25 - The fight against extreme poverty
is "a major priority," Italian Premier Enrico Letta said on
Thursday during question time in the Senate.
"Extreme poverty has no representation, does not vote, but
is widespread and needs answers. Those who sit on these benches
should be troubled by the step from unemployment to destitution.
In our country there are untenable situations and dealing with
these issues is the greatest priority," Letta said.
In recession-ravaged Italy 9.563 million people, 15.8% of
the population, are living in some form of poverty, Istat said
on Wednesday.
The national statistics agency said that, of these, 4.814
million (8% of the population), suffer absolute poverty, which
means they cannot afford to buy essential goods and services for
a dignified life.
