Rome, July 25 - Italy risks grinding to a halt on
August 5 after labor contract negotiations with the country's
three main transportation trade-union confederations fell apart
on Thursday.
The transport arms of GCIL, CISL and UIL said in a
statement that they were telling their members to stop work in
protest "following the interruption of negotiations for the
renewal of the national logistics, freight and shipping
contracts".
The strike will affect local public transport, air, rail
and sea travel, haulage, car rental and even roadside
assistance.
Italy suffered fuel shortages in many areas last year and
food supplies were badly disrupted when truckers went on strike
and blocked roads in protest at high fuel prices.
