Italian couples divorcing less amid economic crisis

Rome, August 1 - Fewer Italians are turning to
divorce not because of the triumph of love, but because many
can't afford to amid the economic crisis, L'Espresso weekly
magazine said in an article to be published Friday.
The number of couples who split 2010 and 2011 was almost
160,000 compared to 150,000 in 2012, the survey said.
The downward divorce trend began three years ago, as the
long-running recession began to ratchet up, "increasing
financial insecurity, unemployment and reducing the purchasing
power of Italian households," the survey said.
Consensual judicial separations have dropped from 104,502
to 98,370 over the last three years, justice ministry data said.
Non-consensual separations dropped 8.9% since the
2009-2010 period, while consensual separations are down 4.3%.
