Rome, August 1 - Junior Industry Minister Antonio
Catricalà on Thursday said the Italian government had no plans
to scrap the television licence fee used to finance State
broadcaster RAI.
Catricalà's comments earlier Thursday to the parliamentary
commission that oversees RAI that "in Europe the concept of a TV
licence is being abandoned in favour of a general tax" sparked
speculation that Italy could move in this direction.
But Catricalà, the former head of Italy's anti-trust
authority, moved quickly to dismiss the reports.
"The TV licence exists in Italy and new systems of
financing (RAI) are not on the horizon," he said of the highly
unpopular and widely evaded tax.
"We have to make sure that everyone pays it to make RAI
better".
