Monti tries to step down as Civic Choice party leader

Rome, August 1 - Members of former premier Mario
Monti's Civic Choice party on Thursday told ANSA that the leader
intended to step down at an assembly meeting late Wednesday, but
agreed not to after his group deterred him.
"But his goodbye is just a matter of time," sources said.
Monti took office in November 2011 in an attempt to shore
up Italy's struggling economy at the peak of the sovereign debt
crisis in the eurozone.
He now leads the centrist and largely Catholic formation
of reformers that make up a small part of Premier Enrico Letta's
cobbled left-right government.
His Civic Choice ticket failed to make a big impact in
Italy's February general election.
