Rome, August 1 - Rome's mayor on Thursday declared
his hope to turn a stretch of boulevard flanking the landmark
Roman Forum into a completely pedestrian zone.
The area already will be closed to private vehicles
starting on Saturday morning at 5:30, but will remain open to
buses, emergency vehicles and taxis with the exception of a
24-hour celebration from 19:00 Saturday evening to 19:00 Sunday
evening.
''I am dreaming of arriving at the total pedestrianization
of the Roman Forum during this administration,'' Mayor Ignazio
Marino said.
''It is clear that offering Romans an alternative to
(current) public transport would help total pedestrianization.
Thus the completion of the metropolitan C line up to Piazza
Venezia is one of the aspects that must be considered in a
manner strictly connected to total pedestrianization,'' Marino
added.
