Finmeccanica's Selex ES to provide UN Congo surveillance


New York, August 2 - Italian defence and transport
giant Finmeccanica has won a contract with the United Nations
(UN) to furnish surveillance in remote areas of the Congo.
The UN Secretariat signed a deal for Finmeccanica's
electronics subsidiary Selex ES to run a monitoring programme in
the Democratic Republic of the Congo using five Falcon unmanned
aircraft, a ground control station, a data-management terminal,
technical and logistical support, and analysis of collected
The Falcon has a range of 250 km, a flight autonomy of at
least 12 hours, and sensors to penetrate vegetation, enabling
identification of vehicles and people both day and night at long
