New York, August 2 - Italian defence and transport
giant Finmeccanica has won a contract with the United Nations
(UN) to furnish surveillance in remote areas of the Congo.
The UN Secretariat signed a deal for Finmeccanica's
electronics subsidiary Selex ES to run a monitoring programme in
the Democratic Republic of the Congo using five Falcon unmanned
aircraft, a ground control station, a data-management terminal,
technical and logistical support, and analysis of collected
data.
The Falcon has a range of 250 km, a flight autonomy of at
least 12 hours, and sensors to penetrate vegetation, enabling
identification of vehicles and people both day and night at long
distance.
''The use of such aircraft will enable enable UN
peacekeepers in the Congo to monitor movements of armed troops
and to protect the civil population in a more efficient way,
especially in the eastern parts of the country,'' a UN spokesman
said.
Finmeccanica's controlling stakeholder is the Italian
State, which holds 30.2%.
