Rome, August 5 - A leading tourism operator said on
Monday that finance police crackdowns on tax evaders at posh
resorts was bad for business.
Finance authorities launched a weekend blitz in the Costa
Smeralda area on Sardinia, looking for luxury boats and other
symbols of wealth that might not have been properly declared on
Italian tax returns.
Flavio Briatore, entrepreneur and jet-setter, dismissed the
raids saying authorities have already driven away the wealthiest
tourists from the region.
"Let them do all the checks they want, there is not much
here," he said, adding that the largest spenders have fled.
"The wealthiest, those with the biggest yachts, have
already gone".
Tourism is suffering in Italy as the country endures its
deepest recession in more than 20 years.
