Conflict 'inevitable' over blocked public pay, union warns

Rome, August 13 - Social conflict "will be
inevitable" over the frozen salaries of Italy's more than three
million public employees, Luigi Angeletti, leader of Italian
labour union Uil said on Tuesday.
"Contracts have been blocked for four years now," said the
leader of one of the country's top three unions.
Public employees are "the only category treated in this
way: conflict will be inevitable".
Salaries of Italy's 3.3 million public employees have been
frozen over the past four years and turnover blocked as part of
measures to curb public spending as the country is grappling
with the longest recession in over 20 years and huge public
debt, which hit a new record in June of 2.0751 trillion euros.
The government has extended a freeze on salary negotiations
for all of 2014.
"We worry about a system made by politicians who, at all
levels, have no idea how to make the public administration more
efficient, and the only thing they do is block contracts," said
