Last year second worst this century for fires in Italy

Brussels, August 16 - Last year marked Italy's
second-worst year for fires so far in the 21st century, the
European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) reported Friday.
With 130,814 hectares of land up in smoke in 2012, only
Spain recorded more terrain lost to fire, leading Europe with
209,855 hectares of scorched earth.
"Last year in the 28-member European Union, over 646,000
hectares of land were lost to fires, that is the amount lost in
2010 and 2011 combined," said Andrea Camia, a member of EFFIS.
In Italy, 2007 was the worst year for forest fires this
century, with 227,000 hectares up in flames, 40% of which was in
Sicily alone.
