Government to revoke IMU tax on first homes, minister says

Rimini, August 19 - Industry Minister Flavio
Zanonato on Friday said the Italian government intends to revoke
the controversial IMU property tax on primary residences.
"There is a precise commitment, that of removing the IMU
tax on primary residences, the government will find a solution,"
Zanonato said in an interview with television broadcaster
Rainews 24.
"A solution needs to be found in the context of the
commitments taken on by Premier Enrico Letta".
Letta, of the center-left Democratic Party (PD), heads the
coalition government that was formed after February's
inconclusive general elections.
Rolling back IMU, which was introduced by the previous
government of Mario Monti, was a campaign promise of ex-premier
Silvio Berlusconi, whose center-right People of Freedom (PdL)
roared to second in elections to become the junior partner in
the current cabinet.
The PdL has threatened to pull its support from the
government if their position is not upheld.
