Italian industry minister takes aim at electricity prices

Rimini, August 19 - A package of measures aimed at
lowering electricity bills will be readied within the coming
weeks, Italian Industry Minister Flavio Zanonato said Monday on
the margins of a meeting in Rimini.
"The most important thing is that we want to significantly
lower the cost of electricity, which is truly excessive in our
country," Zanonato said.
Italians saw their electricity bills jump by 11.2% in the
last half of 2012 compared with one year earlier - one of the
largest increases recorded in the European Union, the region's
statistics agency said at the end of May.
At the same time, gas prices for Italian families rose by
10.3% between the last six months of 2011 and the same period in
2012, Eurostat reported.
The jump in household electricity prices across the EU came
on the heels of an average price increase of 6.3% between 2010
and 2011, and an average gas-price hike of 12.6%.
