Gorizia, August 21 - Approximately 6% of Italians
have become vegetarians, a significant jump from the 4% reported
one year ago, according to statistics released Wednesday.
The figures were released just before a Vegetarian Festival
beginning August 30 in Gorizia in north-eastern Italy.
Many men report excluding animal protein from their diets
for health reasons, according to the 2013 survey by EURISPES, a
think-tank for political, social and economic studies.
In contrast, almost 67% of women who say they are
vegetarians cited animal welfare as the main reason they shun
meat.
