Vatican City, August 22 - Pope Francis has called a
meeting of pontifical social science departments and the world
federation of Catholic medical associations to assess human
trafficking and slavery November 2-3 and frame an action plan,
Vatican Radio said Thursday.
On May 24 the pope urged governments to come up with new
approaches to fight human trafficking.
"Human trafficking is a shameful activity, a disgrace to
our societies that claim to be civilized. Exploiters and
customers at all levels should seriously examine their
conscience before themselves and God," said the pope at a
plenary meeting of the Pontifical Council for Migrants.
Francis called on "governors, legislators and the entire
international community" to come up with "effective initiatives
and new approaches to protect the dignity and improve the
quality of life (for human trafficking victims), and cope with
modern forms of persecution".
