Over 200,000 hens to be slaughtered to stem bird flu spread

Rovigo, August 26 - Some 220,000 egg-laying hens
at the 'Morgante di Lionello and C. di Occhiobello' farm near
the Veneto city of Rovigo suspected of being at high risk for
bird flu will be slaughtered, health officials said on Monday.
The operation follows a new outbreak of bird flu detected
at a farm not far from the nearby town of Ostellato on Friday.
Though tests carried out on the birds showed no signs of
the disease, also known as avian influenza, authorities ordered
the slaughter as part of wider preventative measures aimed at
stemming its spread.
Eggs from the farm will also be destroyed and all possibly
infected materials will be incinerated.
The outbreaks have not posed any human risk, health
authorities said.
