Recession-hit Italians holding on to old cars

Rome, August 26 - Italians are holding on to their
old cars more than ever, opting to take them into the mechanic
instead of buying a new model, according to survey results
Pollsters Cna-Swg say mechanic visits are up 14% nationwide
since the onset of the recession, Italy's worst in decades.
The average age of a car on the road is 10 and a half
years, among the oldest in the European Union, making for more
dangerous streets, the poll said.
The study also showed a boom in engines that run on cheaper
natural gas, up 61%.
