Kyenge 'proud' to be Italian

Rome, August 27 - Despite the abuse she has taken
since her appointment as Italy's first black cabinet minister in
April, Minister for Integration Cecile Kyenge said Tuesday that
she is proud to be Italian.
And, she added in an interview with national broadcaster
RAI, she deliberately chose Italy to be her home.
"I am proud of Italy, I was not forced to take Italian
citizenship, I had a choice," Kyenge said in an interview with
Paolo Mieli for a RAI newsmagazine program, to be aired on Sept.
The Congolese-born minister, who has been subjected to a
barrage of racist attacks from other politicians, said she came
to appreciate Italian cultural values.
And she repeated her belief that immigrant children should
be given citizenship in the country where they are born - a
controversial idea that has triggered opposition in Italy.
