No military action in Syria without UN mandate, says Bonino

Rome, August 27 - Italy will not take part in a
military action in Syria "without a UN Security Council
mandate," Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino told a joint
parliamentary foreign affairs commission on Tuesday.
Bonino told Radio Radicale on Monday that Italy should "try
to avoid turning an international drama into a global one,"
urging listeners to consider the possible reactions of Russia
and Iran.
"Even a limited intervention runs the risk of becoming
unlimited. We must think it over a thousand times, because the
repercussions could be dramatic," she said.
An alleged chemical-weapons attack by the Syrian government
against civilians has raised the possibility of a military
action against Syria by US and British forces.
The US State Department on Monday announced it had
postponed a meeting scheduled for Wednesday in The Hague between
senior diplomats from the US and Russia due to ''ongoing
consultations to find an appropriate response'' over the alleged
chemical-weapons attack.
