Berlusconi's legal woes not a threat to govt, says Letta

Rome, August 29 - Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's
legal woes are not a threat to government stability, Italian
Premier Enrico Letta said on Thursday.
"I am not afraid that there will be an influence on the
life of the government...due to the convictions or legal
proceedings (of Berlusconi)," Letta said in an interview on
Radio Anch'io.
"Italians need a government that provides answers and
solidity," he said.
The Senate is scheduled to decide on September 9
whether to ratify stripping Berlusconi of his Senate seat for a
tax-fraud conviction earlier this month.
An anti-corruption law that includes the provision against
convicted criminals continuing in politics was introduced last
December under former Justice Minister Paola Severino but only
recently took effect.
