Police arrested alleged Camorra mafia fugitive for extortion


Naples, September 3 - Police arrested an alleged
leading member of the Camorra mafia's notorious and feared
Casalesi clan, Umberto Venosa, on Tuesday.
The Camorra controls organized criminal activity around
The 34-year-old fugitive is accused of extortion aggravated
by the use of the mafia method.
Police discovered Venosa in a home in Casapesenna, north of
Naples, inhabited by Giuseppe Verrone, 34, and his 24-year old
Verrone was jailed and his wife charged for aiding the
fugitive, who has been on the run since last month.
Venosa is accused, along with two others, of demanding a
''pizzo'' or protection pay-off from businessmen working in
storage and distribution of Nestle' products.
The defendants allegedly showed up as a trio of thugs to
victims, demanding 2000 euro payments, the so-called ''August
holiday pizzo''.
Venosa's alleged conspirators were arrested last month -
Vincenzo Del Luca, 36, on August 13 and Andrea Bortone, 35, on
August 17.
