Letta optimistic on govt future

Rome, September 4 - Premier Enrico Letta of the
centre-left Democratic Party (PD) said Wednesday he was
optimistic his unprecedented coalition government with
ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) Party
would survive an upcoming Senate vote on the media magnate's
political future.
"I'm optimistic and I have a duty to be optimistic," Letta
said, despite the PdL vowing to sink it if the PD votes, as it
says it will do, to eject the media magnate because of a
six-year ban from office attached to his recent four-year
tax-fraud conviction.
Letta stressed the importance of "going ahead" with reforms
"for the good of the country" and highlighted Berlusconi's
importance as leader of the PdL, junior partner in the unnatural
left-right coalition between long-time foes.
A Senate elections panel convenes to discuss Berlusconi's
ban Monday and is expected to reach its conclusions by the end
of the month.
