CSM opens investigation of judge Esposito

Rome, September 5 - The judiciary's self-governing
body, the CSM, opened an investigation Thursday into the case of
Judge Antonio Esposito and reports of his remarks concerning
ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi.
A senior committee of the CSM is reviewing the case of the
supreme court judge who gave a media interview shortly after the
court upheld Berlusconi's conviction for tax fraud.
That decision to uphold Berlusconi's conviction has
triggered a major political crisis that threatens to bring down
the fragile national coalition government.
The magistrate has said parts of his interview with the
daily Il Mattino had been manipulated to make it appear that he
was commenting on the Berlusconi case, when, the judge
maintained, he was speaking only in general terms.
Il Mattino has said that what it published was a faithful
transcription of the interview.
