Uffizi's Botticelli Annunciation not going to Israel

Rome, September 6 - Sandro Botticelli's famous
Annunciation of St Martin alla Scala will not be travelling to
Israel for a planned months-long exhibition as previously
announced, the culture ministry said Friday.
It said the work, housed in Florence's Uffizi Gallery, would
not be moved and Italy would shortly decide on a work of
equivalent value and significance to send.
Renaissance master Botticelli's 15th-century work was to
have been loaned to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem for several
months starting September 17.
The loan was organized by the Uffizi and the Italy-Israel
Foundation for Culture and the Arts.
The Annunciation is a huge fresco painted by Botticelli in
1481 on a wall at the hospital of San Martino alla Scala in
It was removed from the wall there in 1920 and transferred
to the Uffizi, where it underwent restoration.
Early Renaissance master Botticelli, whose birth name was
Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, was born in Florence in
about 1445, and died in May, 1510.
