Italian industry leader worried about political situation

Rome, September 11 - The head of Italian industrial
employers' confederation Confindustria on Wednesday expressed
concern about the country's political situation, with Premier
Enrico Letta's left-right government seen in danger of
Letta's centre-left Democratic Party (PD) and Silvio
Berlusconi's centre-right People of Freedom (PdL) party on
Monday delayed a vote on a Senate panel regarding a move to
strip the three-time premier of his parliamentary seat after a
tax-fraud conviction was made definitive by the supreme court
last month.
But the showdown has only been put off and the PdL has
threatened it will withdraw its support from Letta's
grand-coalition executive and sink the government if the PD
makes good its intention to vote for Berlusconi to be ejected
from the Upper House.
"Above all, there is a need for stability," Confindustria
President Giorgio Squinzi said.
"The situation is very worrying".
Squinzi is concerned a government crisis will set back the
Italian economy just as it shows signs of emerging from its
longest recession in over two decades.
