Italy wins court battle over Italian in recruitment contests

Brussels, September 12 - European Union-wide
recruitment competitions should be posted in all the EU's
languages and not only English, French and German, the European
Court ruled Thursday in a case brought by Italy.
Italy claimed victory in the case over a number of
recruitment competitions, the notices for which were only
published in English, French and German.
Limiting the number of languages in which EU notices
appeared violated the rights of other candidates who had
"legitimate expectations" of fair treatment, the court in
Luxembourg said.
Anyone who did not speak one of the three languages used in
such postings were "disadvantaged," said the court.
Italy has staged a series of battles against efforts to
limit the number of languages used in EU documents - at the
expense of Italian and other languages - as part of efforts to
cut massive translation costs.
