Bergamo, September 12 - Four people were arrested
on Thursday in the Northern Italian city of Bergamo for forcing
an elderly man to beg and punishing him if he didn't gather
enough funds during a day's forced labour, as well as obliging
him to house them and turn over his 950 euro a month pension.
The 65-year old man was forced to beg in front of shops and
supermarkets in the Northern Italian city of Bergamo by the
female mother-and-daughter prostitute team and their respective
partners.
He was punished by being deprived of water and food,
despite the high temperatures and his already frail physical
state, if he failed to raise the funds the group requested in a
day's begging.
The group were taken in custody by police officers on
Thursday morning for alleged extortion and exploitation of an
incapacitated man in what the city's chief prosecutor, Francesco
Dettori branded "socially very serious incidents".
The arrests were triggered by an April police report filed
by the man, in which he accused the group of forcing him to
house them in his home and turn over his 915 euro a month
pension, as well as beg for them.
He had filed a previous report, in November 2012, in which
he told authorities the group had forced him to hand over some
8,000 euros in various tranches using threats and physical
assaults.
The group were arrested after police investigations
determined that what the man in question, who is a registered
civil invalid, he had reported was true.
