Cagliari, September 16 - Some 80,000 pilgrims are
expected to attend the arrival of Pope Francis in Sardinia on
Sunday, authorities said Monday.
Francis is scheduled to arrive early on September 22 in
Cagliari, where he will then visit the shrine at the
Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria (Madonna di Bonaria), which
indirectly gave the pope's hometown - Buenos Aires - its name.
Roughly 1,000 police officers will be on duty for crowd
management.
The city is providing 90 buses to move pilgrims around the
airport, and three special trains have been assigned to
pilgrims.
"Cagliari is about to attract the attention of the whole
world," said Mayor Massimo Zedda. "The city is involved in every
sector in order to prepare the best welcome for the holy father
and the faithful. We ask everyone to please understand the
traffic delays".
