(embargoed until 22:00 GMT).
Rome, October 30 - The traditional Mediterranean
diet is good for the kidneys according to a study carried out by
researchers at Columbia University and published Thursday.
People who privilege a diet of fresh fruit and vegetables,
fish, legumes and polyunsaturated fats over meat and tinned,
processed and sugary foods are 50% less likely to develop
chronic kidney disease and 42% less likely to develop kidney
damage than those who do not, according to the study published
in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
There are no "magic foods, but there needs to be greater
discipline in the choice of what to put on the table and what to
eat outside the home, leaving the consumption of sweet foods
only to really special occasions," the experts said.
