Striking AST steelworkers block Milan-Naples highway

Rome, November 12 - Some 100 striking steelworkers
from AST steelworks on Wednesday blocked the Milan-Naples
motorway in both directions in the area of the town of Orte,
60km away from the Italian capital.
A traffic jam about a kilometer in length built up due to
the blockade.
The protest is being monitored by police, who set up
mandatory exits in both directions to direct traffic away from
the area.
The steelworkers have been on strike for the past 20 days
in a bid to save their jobs in the face of planned layoffs by
AST's parent company, Germany-based ThyssenKrupp.
"The AST workers are exasperated by the lack of
certainties," said UGL steelworkers union chief Maria Antonietta
"Now more than ever, we need a responsible attitude from
the parties in order to find a quick, shared and definitive
solution that looks to the future".
The action comes ahead of a November 18 meeting between
unions and management, with the government sitting in.
"Employees are defending their working future and have a
right to clear answers, otherwise the social fallout could be
dramatic," she warned.
In July ThyssenKrupp announced a new industrial plan for
its wholly-owned subsidiary AST including cuts of 100 million
euros and up to 550 jobs.
Under the plan one of the two furnaces at the plant in the
Umbrian town of Terni was to be shut down by 2015-2016,
ThyssenKrupp said at the time.
However in August the company accepted a government appeal
to put the plan on hold so talks could take place following
industrial action.
By early November, the company had reportedly agreed in
government-brokered talks with labor to keep both furnaces open
and invest 200 million euros. But the parties have yet to agree
on a final version of the company's revised industrial plan.
