(ANSA) Genoa, April 10 - Italy must 'get up to speed' and
belatedly pass legislation outlawing torture, the head of the
Italian bishops' conference, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, said
Friday.
"Torture can only be condemned and Italy, if it is late,
must get up to speed," said Bagnasco, who is the Roman Catholic
archbishop of Genoa.
The prelate made his remarks following the condemnation of
Italy by the European Court of Human rights for the use of
torture against demonstrators at the G8 conference in Genoa in
2001 and for failing to have legislation specifically outlawing
the use of torture.
A bill that would make torture a crime is being examined by
the Italian parliament.
