Milan, September 14 - The Belgium pavilion at Expo
offered a tasting of a pasta and a patè both made from
mealworms, following a press conference Monday on the breeding
of insects for human consumption.
Belgium is the only European country so far to have
regulated the use of insects for human consumption.
In September, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
will publish its opinion on the consumption of insects as food.
Andrea Mascaretti, president of the scientific committee of
the Italian organisation Società Umanitaria (Humanitarian
Society), said that his group is sure the opinion will be
favorable.
"For years Italy has been on the front lines for the
introduction of insects into our diet. (It's) one of the most
valid solutions for feeding the planet of the future,"
Mascaretti said.
