People should limit, not eliminate, some foods -WHO official

Milan, October 27 - Some foods need to be limited
as part of a healthy diet but do not need to be completely
eliminated, the assistant director-general of the World Health
Organisation Oleg Chestnov said on Tuesday, after the agency
released a report linking red and processed meats to cancer.
"It's important not to eliminate foods but rather to limit
and manage them correctly," Chestnov said on the sidelines of a
conference on food and nutrition organised by the Italian Health
Ministry at the Expo world fair.
He said the document linking red meats to cancer was aimed
mainly at politicians, so that they can regulate the sector
appropriately within their borders.
The conference on nutrition aims to discuss ways to ensure
all people can follow diversified, safe and healthy diets, and
that all children can grow up to achieve their full potential.
More than 160 million children under five suffer from
chronic malnutrition globally while 500 million people in the
world are obese.
