Rome, April 20 - President Sergio Mattarella told
the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement's House and Senate whips
Wednesday that he saw no reason to intervene when a small
center-right caucus voted to strike down two no-confidence
motions in the Senate yesterday.
The Liberal Popular Alliance - Autonomies (ALA) group led
by former top Silvio Berlusconi aide Denis Verdini has given
center-left Premier Matteo Renzi its backing on several
occasions.
The no-confidence motions were brought by the M5S, by
Berlusconi's Forza Italia (FI) party, and by the rightwing
Northern League.
The M5S complained to Mattarella that ALA has de facto
joined the majority. Mattarella said "I saw no reason to
intervene".
"You tell me a group has joined the governing majority,
that doesn't belong there," he said.
"My parameter is the Constitution. If I saw reasons to
intervene according to the Constitution, I would. But I did not
see them," Mattarella said according to a statement issued by
the president's office.
