PD exec backs Gentiloni as premier

Rome, December 12 - The Democratic Party (PD)
executive on Monday unanimously approved President Sergio
Mattarella's choice of former foreign minister Paolo Gentiloni
as premier to lead a new government following the resignation of
Matteo Renzi last week.
A dissenting PD minority ensured its backing of Gentiloni but
said "today stability means change", that it wants
"discontinuity" from the past government's agenda, and that it
will assess the government's "capacity to listen to the
MP Roberto Speranza, leader of a dissenting PD wing called
Reformist Left, said that 33 million referendum voters "sent a
message that this isn't working at all".
Renzi stepped down last week following a crushing defeat in a
December 4 referendum on his constitutional reform law.
"We must change and do so with humility - we must radically
change course," Speranza said.
"(Otherwise) the left makes no sense, we are no longer
ourselves, and the PD is destined to die".
He urged the PD to "see society's rage, discontent, anxiety"
and to stop "burying its head under the sand".
Speranza also asked Renziif the party still has room for
"I'm asking Matteo Renzi to tell us if there's no more room
in the PD for those who voted No (on the referendum)," Speranza
said. "I think we must recover a piece of the electorate that
voted No".
Speranza quit as PD House whip in early 2015 over
disagreements with the PD party line on electoral reform.
